FreeJoy Guide

Step 1: Download the FreeJoy Software

  1. Download: Download version 1.7.0 B3 here.

Step 2: Launch FreeJoy and Select Your Device

  1. Launch FreeJoy: Extract the file to your PC. Open the FreeJoy Configurator.
  2. Select Your Pedals: In the top left corner under 'Device', select your pedals.

Step 3: Read and Backup Configuration

  1. Backup Your Configuration: Before making any changes, click on 'Read Config from Device' and save this file to your computer. This is crucial to avoid bricking your pedals, as it provides you with an original configuration to revert back to if needed.
  2. Loading a Backup File and Writing to the Control Box:
    • If you forget to save your backup, you can load the backup file provided by Ghost Sim Racing here. Extract the file to you computer. Click on 'Load Config from File' button and select the backup file.
    • After loading the configuration file, write it to your control box by clicking the 'Write Config to Device' button. A "Save" message will appear over the button, confirming the action.

Step 4: Adjust Advanced USB Settings

  1. Change USB Setting: Navigate to the Advanced Settings tab and locate the USB Settings box.
  2. Modify VID: The default VID is set to 2497. Change this to 2410.
  3. Write and Verify Configuration:
    • Click 'Write Config to Device' to apply the new VID setting.
    • Use the 'Read Config from Device' button to ensure the current configuration is correctly displayed. Get accustomed to using these buttons frequently for adjustments.

Step 5: Calibrate Your Pedals

  1. Test Pedal Input: Press each pedal and ensure FreeJoy recognizes the input.
  2. Standard Axis Naming:
    • The throttle is named "Ry".
    • The brake is "Rx".
    • The clutch is "Z".
    • Take note of these names as you'll need them for axis curve adjustments.
  3. Calibrate and Save Configuration:
    • Click on 'Calibrate'.
    • Fully press and release each pedal several times.
    • Click 'Stop and Save'.

Step 6: Write Configuration to Device

  1. Apply Configuration: Click on 'Write Config to Device' again. This applies the new settings to your pedals. Remember to make sure your pedals are selected in the top right drop down before and after writing to device to avoid writing to the wrong device.

Step 7: Adjusting Calibration for Accuracy

  1. Adjust the Red Bar for Accuracy: The red bar should move from left (unpressed) to right (fully pressed) corresponding to the 0 to 100 pedal input. If it's not reaching 100, adjustments are needed.
  2. Adjust Minimum Value (Dead Zone):
    • Add a small measure of dead zone to the minimum number to counter any unintended pedal inputs caused by the load cell sensor's sensitivity.
  3. Adjust Maximum Value:
    • Reduce the max number to ensure that 100% input is registered when the pedal is fully pressed.

Step 8: Apply and Test Changes

  1. Apply Changes: After making adjustments, apply the changes by clicking the 'Write Config to Device' button and test the pedal input.
  2. Fine-Tuning: Make any necessary tweaks to the values for optimal performance.

Step 9: Repeat for Other Pedals

  1. Configure Each Pedal: Repeat the calibration process for the clutch and brake pedals writing to device after each calibration or change.

Step 10: Special Note for Brake Pedal

  1. Customize Brake Firmness: Adjust the max value for the brake pedal according to your preference for firmness to reach 100% braking input. This may require on-track testing and subsequent fine-tuning.

(Optional) Step 11: Set Axes Curves for Each Pedal

  1. Access Axes Curves: Navigate to the 'Axes Curves' tab.
  2. Adjust Curves: Fine-tune the response curve for each pedal (Ry for throttle, Rx for brake, Z for clutch) to match your driving style and preferences.
  3. Apply and Test: After adjusting the curves, click 'Write Config to Device' to apply these settings. Test the pedals to ensure the response feels natural and accurate.
  4. Back up your file (As a separate file then your base config file) and save to computer using the "Save config to file" button. Use step 3.2 to load configure file.

Final Notes

  • Experiment On-Track: It's crucial to test these settings in a real sim racing environment to find what works best for you.
  • Fine-Tune as Needed: You may need to return to FreeJoy for minor adjustments after testing your settings in-game.
